The Cannabis Support Scale

The cannabis legalization support scale broadly speaking...

People's stance towards cannabis can be broadly classified into five categories - strong supporters, weak supporters, neutral, weak opponents and strong opponents.

Strong supporters of cannabis legalization are people who have lost their loved ones to a fatal disease or law enforcement action and who realize too late that the legal availability of cannabis could possibly have changed the outcome. The painful experience of having to live with this becomes the fuel that drives their efforts for cannabis legalization. They hope that others lives can be saved in future. A few people who have managed to overcome serious illnesses or for whom the plant is a key part of their lives also fall in this category. Also people who view cannabis as a spiritual herb and aid are generally strong supporters. Cultures in which cannabis is an inherent part of the way of life, such as indigenous communities and tribes, can also be termed strong supporters.

Weak supporters of cannabis legalization are people who have tried cannabis for recreational or medical purposes and have liked it. They are however not open in their support because the plant is illegal and because they fear the response of society and their employers. If the plant is legalized, they are likely to become regular users and possibly move to the strong supporters category.

Persons who are neutral to cannabis legalization are mostly people who have not heard about the herb or have not tried it. It doesn't matter to them whether the plant is legalized or prohibited. A large majority of persons fall into this category.

Weak opponents
of cannabis legalization are persons who oppose the legalization of cannabis based on exposure to misinformation about the plant or who have a dislike for the stoner based on stereotyping or who oppose purely for mental debates and entertainment purposes. A lot of these people do not even know that cannabis and opium are two different plants, and the difference between a natural herb and a synthetic drug.

Strong opponents of cannabis legalization are persons who stand to be directly negatively affected by it such as persons in industries that may be affected by the plant's legalization or persons who are funded or employed directly by these competing industries and their lobbies.
