Cannabis and Kansas

Kansas is one of the US states that still has not legalized cannabis for recreational or medical use. There is more progress on the cultivation of cannabis variant hemp which many Kansas farmers seem keen to pursue. Hemp was legalized in the 2018 Farm Bill. Medical use of cannabis is now legal in 32 states. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has recently endorsed medical marijuana use saying that many states are now benefiting from making this therapy available to their residents and Kansas should do the same. 

Crime rates have gone down in areas bordering Colorado where cannabis is legal. The former US Attorney of Kansas Barry Grissom has called the federal classification of cannabis with heroin as a Schedule 1 controlled substance absurd. 

 

Kansas is now surrounded on three sides by states with either legalized recreational or medical marijuana use, after Missouri voters approved medical use on Nov. 6, 2020. If lawmakers procrastinate and fail to make the necessary changes, it may require action from the people as has been done in 13 of the 15 states that have legalized adult recreational use. One way or the other it is inevitable that Kansas must legalize medical cannabis and eventually recreational cannabis or both in one go as South Dakota did.

 

At least 35 US states have legalized cannabis for medical use so far. The federal US government however continues to keep cannabis in the Schedule 1 list of banned substances saying that it has no medicinal value. All these states have legalized cannabis for adult recreational use, aimed specifically at improving public health, ensuring equity,  reducing crime, decreasing the black market, improving law enforcement, reforming criminal justice, improving the economy, agriculture and industry, to name just a few reasons.
