Cannabis and Palau

Palau's government is looking to legalize cannabis for medical use. This is a good step but the approach needs to be more comprehensive with full adult recreational use legalization being pursued as this is the only way that the plant can become accessible to all who need it especially the small farmers, the poor, the elderly and the sick. Some of the leaders, including those of traditional communities, have asked for full legalization and for cannabis to be treated as a commodity,  a source of income and possibly a product for export related trade. This I agree with. Making cannabis a commodity will prove to be preventive affordable medicine for the people, boost the economy, increase tourism and reduce the load on law enforcement besides making cannabis a sustainable agricultural crop and a valuable source of direct revenue from sales and indirect revenue from savings on health costs that can be channelized into community development, education, infrastructure, etc.

In December 2020,  the UN voted to remove cannabis from its most restricted Schedule IV category of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. It does however still remain in Schedule I, which is the least restrictive. This one move by the UN itself should be sufficient to bring about the recreational legalization of cannabis in every nation and an overhaul of national drug laws.

Listed below are articles taken from various media related to the above subject. Words in italics are the thoughts of your truly at the time of reading the article.

I agree with the traditional leader's comments when he says marijuana should become an export commodity for Palau. Having a joint and a beer is great Mr President...

'“I believe that none of us here is against medicinal marijuana or want to deny its useful health benefits,” Remengesau said.

The president was responding to one of the traditional leader’s Ibedul Yutaka Gibbons comments during the meeting regarding the possibility of marijuana becoming an export commodity and a source of income for Palau.'
