Cannabis and Idaho

Idaho was one of three US states, along with South Dakota and Nebraska, where cannabis including CBD is said to be illegal for medical or recreational purposes. The waves of the rising tide of cannabis legalization have however started to lap at the borders of the state. South Dakota's voters in one fell swoop have legalized both medical and recreational cannabis without waiting any longer for procrastinating lawmakers.

 

Idaho's Republican lawmakers are predominantly opposed to cannabis while its Democratic lawmakers are said to be favored to cannabis reflecting the national state of affairs. The state restricted the flow of hemp through its borders from other US states where cannabis was legal and from Canada until recently. The Idaho Senate however voted recently to allow the passage of hemp through the state signalling a thawing in the state's stance on cannabis. The 2020 elections and the effect it has had on the Idaho lawmakers will be one of the factors determining the legalization of cannabis. The people however are the  most important factor and surely they cannot remain oblivious to the positive changes happening across the country for too long.

 

At least 35 US states have legalized cannabis for medical use so far. The federal US government however continues to keep cannabis in the Schedule 1 list of banned substances saying that it has no medicinal value. All these states have legalized cannabis for adult recreational use, aimed specifically at improving public health, ensuring equity,  reducing crime, decreasing the black market, improving law enforcement, reforming criminal justice, improving the economy, agriculture and industry, to name just a few reasons.
