Cannabis and Delaware

Delaware is one of the US states that is looking promising to legalize recreational cannabis soon. The state made an attempt to legalize it in 2018 but could not get the required super majority among its elected representatives. There has however been a change in the composition of the lawmakers that constitute the House and the Senate with cannabis advocates saying that the present composition is better aligned to legalization.

The state still faces opposition to legalization from some members of the medical community and the pro-prohibition groups and industries such as medical, pharmaceutical and alcohol industries. Delaware is home to Joe Biden, one of the architects of the war on drugs, who was the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee in the 1980s. His influence over drug policy is said to have put in place the costly, unjust and oppressive war on drugs in the 1980s which still continues in the US and around the world today. He is known to have created the post of the 'drug czar', the position occupied by the person responsible for implementing the huge failure that is the war on drugs through the National Office of Drug Policy and the DEA. The fact that Joe Biden is still around and is now President of the US should be a matter of national and international concern. He has, however, supposedly softened his stance on cannabis and said that he may agree to decriminalization in his presidential campaign. But decriminalization may sound good in Saudi Arabia, not in today's US where the majority of the people want legalization, 15 states have legalized adult recreational use, the majority of his own party, the Democrats, support legalization as do increasing numbers of Republicans and where the House of Representatives in a historic vote in December 2020 voted to legalize recreational cannabis.

Overall, Delaware figures in the list of most promising states that are likely to legalize cannabis for recreational use in the near future. At least 35 US states have legalized cannabis for medical use so far. The federal US government however continues to keep cannabis in the Schedule 1 list of banned substances saying that it has no medicinal value. All these states have legalized cannabis for adult recreational use, aimed specifically at improving public health, ensuring equity,  reducing crime, decreasing the black market, improving law enforcement, reforming criminal justice, improving the economy, agriculture and industry, to name just a few reasons.

Comparing marijuana to tobacco shows incredible naivety. If Big Marijuana becoming like Big Tobacco is a concern, what about Big Pharma that feeds all these medical associations? The states that these medical associations represent have been in the news in recent times for the devastating effects of crystal meth, fentanyl and synthetic cannabis like K2. It is very likely that these dangerous drugs are thriving because of restrictive laws on cannabis and the mentality of the medical associations.
