Cannabis and Luxembourg

A number of political parties in Luxembourg got together to vote in favor of adult recreational cannabis legalization. Luxembourg, one of the smallest and most affluent countries in the world with a population of just 600,000, made this landmark decision to re-introduce a plant that has one of the safest recreational profiles in order to boost the options for using cannabis as universal medicine for its people as well as to reduce the harms caused by the overuse of pharmaceutical drugs and to prevent the proliferation of drugs like  heroin and other opioids, methamphetamine, cocaine, synthetic cannabinoids, novel psychotropic substances and abuse of prescription drugs..

Post the decision from lawmakers, I have not heard much about legalization initiatives. The actual date of legalization for adult recreational use was yet to be finalized. A number of European countries have moved forward in the direction of legalization of medical cannabis and a few are looking to decriminalize all drugs but the truly impactful and right decision to take is to legalize cannabis for adult recreational use. It remains to be seen if Luxembourg makes the key step and becomes Europe's first country to legalize recreational cannabis or if like other European nations, it continues the hypocrisy with regard to cannabis, its usage and legality in its national and international policies.

In December 2020,  the UN voted to remove cannabis from its most restricted Schedule IV category of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. It does however still remain in Schedule I, which is the least restrictive. This one move by the UN itself should be sufficient to bring about the recreational legalization of cannabis in every nation and an overhaul of national drug laws. 

 

It must be noted that in most places where cannabis legalization has happened it took the efforts of the people who mobilized themselves through grassroots level movements to bring about this change. Left to lawmakers legalization would have been impossible, as the main interests of lawmakers concern the protection of the big industries opposed to cannabis such as pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, medical, alcohol and tobacco. For something that truly benefits the people, the people themselves have had to make the change.
