Cannabis and Romania

Romania has started to look at legalizing cannabis for medical use. With many states in the US recognizing 30+ medical conditions that can be treated with cannabis and with many European nations quietly putting in place medical cannabis healthcare systems, it is no surprise that Romania is also starting to show interest. Traditional cannabis consuming countries like the Netherlands, Denmark and increasingly Spain, Luxembourg, Norway and France as well as the countries looking to secure medical cannabis for their people such as Germany, Italy, the UK, Switzerland, Israel etc has provided impetus for steps towards cannabis legalization in Romania.

It is important for Romania to be in sync with the information and scientific studies emerging from the places in the world where cannabis has been legalized for medical and recreational purposes and to make the necessary changes quickly for the benefit of its people.

Promoting home growing and small farmer cultivation of cannabis should be explored in places where sufficient sun light and geographical conditions permit it. If there are traditional indigenous varieties of cannabis that exist in Romania the same must be revived, protected and encouraged.  Cannabis as a recreational plant is a universal preventive medicine that will keep many ailments that would otherwise require expensive and largely ineffective pharmaceutical medications at bay. Cannabis will provide people with a safe recreational drug that will reduce the harms from heroin, opioids, methamphetamine, synthetic cannabinoids, prescription drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Its healing effects will aid in the physical and mental health of the elderly, the ill, sports persons, armed forces, women, the youth, animals and  people in general. 

In December 2020,  the UN voted to remove cannabis from its most restricted Schedule IV category of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. It does however still remain in Schedule I, which is the least restrictive. This one move by the UN itself should be sufficient to bring about the recreational legalization of cannabis in every nation and an overhaul of national drug laws. 

 

It must be noted that in most places where cannabis legalization has happened it took the efforts of the people who mobilized themselves through grassroots level movements to bring about this change. Left to lawmakers legalization would have been impossible, as the main interests of lawmakers concern the protection of the big industries opposed to cannabis such as pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, medical, alcohol and tobacco. For something that truly benefits the people, the people themselves have had to make the change
